Japanese Tiger Painting

A tiger lowers its head to drink from a stream, pink tongue out to lap the water, in this five-panel canvas. Its striped face fills the tall center panel, and the scene spreads to the sides in loose watercolor splashes of blue, violet, green and gray, with rocks and water at the edges.

The painting is sold as a Japanese tiger painting, a nod to the long tradition of tigers in Japanese art, though the image itself is a modern watercolor with no Japanese motifs. Its strength is the close view: the whiskers, the half closed eyes and the bright orange coat against cool blues. The panels step down from the center outward, so the set forms a broad shape over a sofa or a console.
