Mini Japanese Tiger Demon Statue

Carved from pale golden wood, this small tiger prowls forward with its head low and its mouth open in a snarl that shows the fangs and the tongue. Dark inset eyes give the face its focus, and fine chisel strokes trace the fur along the back, the shoulders and the ruff, with no paint and no stripes added.

A snarling tiger in plain wood

Because the carving is left in its natural color, the cut marks and the curves of the muscles do all the work. The body stretches long and low, one front paw reaching ahead and the tail sweeping up behind, a stance that suits a bookshelf, a tea table or a desk. The figure is small enough to rest on an open hand. In East Asian tradition the tiger is regarded as a guardian of the home, and carved tigers have long been kept indoors with that meaning in mind. Wood and sizes

The statue is carved in limewood with a smooth, polished finish. Two sizes are offered, 13 x 3.5 x 4.5 centimeters and 17 x 4.5 x 6.5 centimeters. As with any carved wood, the grain and the shade vary slightly from one piece to the next.
