Tiger Statue Monster

This tiger stalks forward low to the ground, one front paw stretched far ahead and its long tail curling up and back in a hook. Its face is more beast than cat: heavy rolled brows, a snub nose with spiral nostrils and an open jaw showing its fangs, which gives the piece its monster name. The aged golden-bronze finish darkens in the hollows and shines on the raised parts.

Scrolls, studs and a ringed tail

Instead of painted stripes, the body is covered in raised ornament. Curling scrolls sweep over the shoulder and haunch, a row of ridged stripes runs along the flank, and small round studs dot the belly and hip. The tail is divided into neat rings from base to tip, and a small crest runs along the back of the neck. The style recalls old guardian beasts more than a lifelike animal. Other designs, from carved wood to cast metal, stand in our tiger statue collection, and our list of the top 10 tiger statues looks at famous examples.

Size and material

The statue is made of copper and measures 20x6.5x6cm. At 1.2kg it is heavy for its length, so it stands firmly on a desk, a shelf or a mantel.
