Korean Tiger of the Reef Statue

Shoulders low and front paws braced on the stone, the tiger of this small golden statue creeps down a rocky ledge, its mouth open in a snarl that shows the teeth. The body stretches in one long diagonal from the raised hindquarters to the lowered head, and the tail drops down the back of the rock and curls at the tip. Leaves and grass are carved into the rock beneath its belly.

The tiger of the rocks

The whole sculpture is built around one downward movement, the tiger leaving its rocky perch with its weight on the front paws. The stripes are engraved into the polished surface, and the ruff around the face, the ribs of the rock and the plants are worked in fine relief, so the light picks out a different detail at every angle.
